Sick Visits Q & A

What are sick visits?

Sick visits are appointments you schedule at Virginia Pediatric Group when your child isn’t feeling well or has an injury that needs treatment. These visits focus on getting your child treatment for pain or other symptoms as quickly as possible to prevent more serious complications.

Some conditions and symptoms the pediatricians can address during an in-person sick visit or via the telemedicine platform include:

  • Pain
  • Fever
  • Rashes
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Infections
  • Colds and flu
  • Cuts and burns
  • Breathing difficulties

Infants that experience unexplained symptoms, like a high fever or vomiting, require immediate medical attention to prevent dehydration and other complications.

If your child has complications from an underlying medical condition, like allergies, diabetes, or asthma, that you need help managing, the Virginia Pediatric Group providers can diagnose your child’s symptoms and treat their condition.

When should I schedule a sick visit?

Sick visits are available to diagnose and treat common childhood illnesses. However, if your child has a serious illness or severe symptoms, it is important that you take them to the nearest emergency room or call 911 for assistance.

Some examples of conditions that require emergency room care include:

  • Broken bone
  • Severe burn
  • Head injury
  • Severe pain
  • Asthma attack
  • Loss of consciousness

If you are unsure if your child needs to be seen by their pediatrician, you can reach out to our nursing staff for guidance during business hours.

When the offices are not open, you can contact our after-hours care by calling 703-573-2432 for 24-hour access through our answering service. For non-urgent questions, you may also email advicenurse@VAPG.com.

What happens during a sick visit?

The staff at Virginia Pediatric Group tries to schedule same-day sick visits whenever possible to ensure your child gets the treatment they need quickly. The physicians can also meet with your child via the telemedicine platform online or by phone to evaluate their symptoms when you are not able to travel to the office.

During your child’s evaluation, your pediatrician reviews your child’s medical history and symptoms. In addition to a physical exam, they might also order diagnostic testing such as blood work or rapid COVID-19, strep, or flu testing.

Based on the results of your child’s exam and diagnostic tests, the pediatric team customizes a plan to treat your child’s symptoms and help them feel better fast.
