Well Child Visits Q & A

What are well-child visits?

Well-child visits are routine checkups that you schedule for your child, even when they’re not sick or experiencing any symptoms.

The pediatricians at Virginia Pediatric Group offer well-child visits to ensure your child is healthy, growing properly, and reaching developmental milestones. You can meet with your child’s provider in person or via the telemedicine platform.

When do I need to schedule well-child visits?

Your child needs well-child visits starting soon after they’re born. Virginia Pediatric Group offers these first few visits as part of their newborn care services.

As your child gets older, they need a well-child visit at 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months. Starting when your child reaches the age of 3 years, they need a well-child visit once a year unless they have underlying physical or mental health issues that require more frequent checkups.

You can also schedule a sick visit between wellness checks if your child becomes ill or injured.

What can I expect during a well-child visit?

Virginia Pediatric Group schedules well-child visits in 20-minute time slots. If your child has complex medical issues that need more attention, let the office staff know ahead of time, and they can schedule extra time into your appointment.

During your child’s evaluation, your pediatrician reviews your child’s medical history and chats with them to build trust and make them comfortable. The provider performs a physical exam to assess your child’s overall health and will note important information about their:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Temperature
  • Vision and hearing
  • Heart and lung function
  • Spinal alignment

Your pediatrician also evaluates your child’s skin health, muscle strength, and joint flexibility and will continue to track any changes from one well-child visit to the next. They can administer the necessary vaccines based on your child’s age to protect against contagious diseases like chickenpox and whooping cough.

If you have any concerns about your child’s physical or mental health or behaviors, a well-child visit is an ideal time to address them.

The pediatrician can also address topics like sexual health, drug and alcohol abuse, and peer pressure with teens in an age-appropriate way.

To schedule a well-child visit in the office or through the telemedicine platform, call the Virginia Pediatric Group office nearest you or make an appointment through online booking today.
