Asthma Care

Asthma also known as Reactive Airway Disease is a chronic, obstructive lung disease characterized by bronchospasm, mucus secreation and lower airway inflammation. Symptoms range from mild to severe respiratory distress and must be taken very seriously. Many patients with mild to moderate Asthma will outgrow their disease in time.

Most asthmatics can become well and stay well, but must first understand completely, the process of asthma and its management.

At Virginia Pediatric Group, Ltd., we know that with education, guidance, and close followup, most patients can stay well and out of the hospital.


Goals of asthma management include:

  • understanding each patient's symptoms
  • maintaining control of symptom
  • maintaining normal activity level
  • maintaining pulmonary function and preventing irreversible airway obstructio
  • educating families regarding use of medicines thus avoiding adverse reaction

  1. Virginia Pediatric Group provides the following for all asthma patients: An educational visit reviewing the following:
    • anatomy and physiology of the lung
    • environmental trigger
    • a written home management plan
    • medications and their purpose
    • use of peak flow meter
    • internet web site addressee
    • written information to take home
  2. Follow-up telephone checks every week to every month, depending upon need
  3. Follow-up asthma education when necessary
