Medication Dosages

Acetaminophen (Tylenol)

This medication is a fever reducer and pain reliever. Please be aware that while manufacturers have discontinued the 80 mg/0.8 ml infant suspension, replaced by the 160 mg/5 mL infant suspension, both products may still be available. Always look closely at the concentration in liquid suspensions and number of milligrams in capsules, tablets, or suppository to make sure they match the chart. If your infant is less than 2 months old and has a fever (temperature > 100.3ºF), call us immediately and do NOT give any medications. Ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil)

This medication is a fever reducer and pain reliever. It is not for use in children 6 months or younger. Please be aware that there is an infant suspension (50 mg/1.25 mL) and a children’s suspension (100 mg/5mL), which are dosed differently. Always look closely at the concentration in liquid suspensions and number of milligrams in capsules or tablets to make sure they match the chart. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)

This medication provides relief for itching and allergies. It may be used for mild allergic symptoms such as hives, eye itching, sneezing, and runny nose. If your child is having symptoms of a more serious allergic reaction such as shortness of breath, tongue or throat swelling, vomiting, or dizziness, you need to go to the nearest emergency room immediately or call 911.
